The seventh annual BIGGEST little New Works Festival at Brüka Theatre is a showcase for original theatre pieces featuring traditional and nontraditional performances and stage readings created by local and regional performing artists. Some of these pieces have gone on to perform in National Fringe Festivals. This small festival features nine staged readings and one spoken word performance over four days in our downtown Sub-Brüka space. Readings range from monologues to full-length productions.  Groups receive a portion of the ticket sales.

PS. PENTACULUM SULAYMAN  SYNOPSIS:  

Set within the Present Time, our story takes place in the scenery of a technologically smart condominium known as Pentaculum Sulaymān.

The Handyman/Janitor becomes a guide in weaving together the stories of seven residences that live within the building...whose lives are separate yet interconnected.

Rooted in deep-seeded mysticism and lore, eight ancient glyphs become characters that are fleshed out and modernize to discuss raw subjects of traumas and boundaries. Anxieties and stigmas that affect the development of different personal relationships, even on happenstance, become all too entangled between wants—versus the need to get the fuck out of there. 

As the message unfolds, the Handyman reveals how everyone is connected to something. Even in its most twisted of encounters.

SLANTED SYNOPSIS: 

A story of love, loss, and the trials of life through the eyes of four people too entangled with each other to see clearly. David, a young college student, meets with his adopted sibling Eleanor. They struggle with a severe attachment to one another that wears on both their mental stability. David discusses his worry about Elizabeth, a young broken thing in a relationship with David, that is meeting with her abusive ex-boyfriend, Jake, to make amends. The thin string of trust between these four is fraying quickly and the ability to rectify what has been lost is nearly gone.

On a busy street corner in Manhattan’s glitzy Soho, a visiting fat cat gets a Christmas surprise from a lowly squeegee man in this wry, humorous tale of asymmetrical urban warfare. 

KILLING IN HUIPILES SYNOPSIS:

Enjoy fine dining?  Why not try someone else’s culture?  A successful businessman recounts his start in the import-export trade in 1980’s war-torn Guatemala.  Well, as the Baron said: “No better time for a profit than when blood is running in the streets.”  Yes, but it’s the Count who sleeps away the day, in a sealed compartment aboard a steamer, in his native soil. KILLARNEY SABBATICAL SYNOPSIS:  

Moi an olge agus tiocfaidh si: "Praise the child and she will flourish"
Killarney Sabbatical is the funny and heart-rending story of Charlie Byrne.  She has returned to Killarney, Ireland to face her daughter, Maggie - who she left behind as an infant, and to write a book as she has just earned tenure at a Catholic University in the U.S.  She attempts to rekindle a relationship with her daughter's father, Irish poet, and storyteller - Jamie Moran, who alternately provides gentle humor, romance and anguish for both as their romance collides with her rigidly quiet, scholarly life.  She is researching the young who perished in Killarney during the great famine and finally confronts her greatest, personal loss.

WE ALWAYS CALL THEIR NAMES SYNOPSIS:  

It all began with immigrant women and Girls. The item was known as "The Shirtwaist" -  Shirts for women worn separately - just like Men. A new dawn of independence that first manifested in cloth. Remnants of which would later ignite a fire consuming the very people who ignited a movement. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was the biggest garment factory in New York from which The Women's Garment Union Strike started and spread like 'fire' through the city deemed "the uprising of the 20,000" eventually leading to the tragedy of the 146 women on March 25, 1911. One Hundred Seven years have passed and the fire rages on.

This is a tale of two sisters wrestling within the flames of the very inequality and dehumanization that has haunted women since the first scrap sparked from a foreman’s tossed cigarette. Just like those young women and girls of old, when facing the flames of the discarded the two sisters must decide their fate with a simple choice - quick or slow?

THE UNLEASHED HEARTS SYNOPSIS:  

What happens when a retired lawyer who runs a decrepit gas station bypassed by a modern highway finds that he’s running out of time to find a home for his beloved dog Guilford before he (the lawyer, not Guilford) dies of pancreatic cancer? The family who had promised to take Guilford in has just reneged, man and dog are alone, and all seems lost. It is at just this moment that a young prostitute (Ella Rae) who has taken the wrong road and run out of gas stumbles upon the pair. All three lost creatures know what they want and what they need, and two of them tell each other. But no one thinks to ask Guilford.
